Holiday Hair Care Checklist for Healthy Curls

Holidays are generally filled with sunny days, beach trips, poolside afternoons and lots of photo opportunities. However, while your curls could look fabulous in your holiday pictures, heat, moisture, saltwater and chlorine may leave them dry, frizzy and difficult to control.

The great news? A small amount of preparation can help your curls stay soft, defined and healthy throughout your journey. Here is a basic holiday hair care guidelines checklist to help your curls seem their best from takeoff to landing.

Start With A Moisturising Routine

Healthy curls begin at the house. Curly hair is more susceptible to dryness as a result of natural oils from the scalp finding it harder to navigate the twists and turns of the hair strand.

In the weeks leading up to your vacation, specialise in hydration. Use a moisturising cleanser and conditioner designed for your curl pattern and consider adding a deep-conditioning treatment to your regular care.

Avoid overwhelming your curls with loads of new merchandise right before travelling. Alternatively, stick to hair care products that your curls already reply well to.

Pack Your Curl Essentials

Your holiday beauty case doesn’t have to store the entire bathroom shelves. Decide on a couple of reliable hair care products that cover the basics.

Your checklist will include:

  • A gentle, moisturising cleanser

  • A nourishing conditioner

  • A leave-in conditioner

  • Your preferred curl-defining product

  • A light oil or serum

  • A broad-toothed comb

  • A micro-fibre towel or a soft cotton tee

  • A satin or silk bonnet, scarf or pillowcase

Keeping your regimen straightforward makes it easier to care for your curls once to travel.

Protect Your Hair From The Sun

Your skin is not the only real place that must be protected from the sun. Direct contact with UV rays can leave hair feeling dry and should contribute to colour fading, particularly if your hair has undergone any chemical processing or color treatment.

Protect your hair with a wide-brimmed sun hat. There’s also a plethora of hair product formulations that include UV protection. Just remember that protection works best when it becomes part of your everyday holiday routine rather than something you reach for only after spending hours in the sun.

Be Careful With Chlorine And Saltwater

As enjoyable as pool and ocean dips could be, chlorine and saltwater leave curls susceptible to feeling rough and stripped.

Before diving in, rinse your hair with fresh water. This helps saturate the strands, ensuring they soak up less pool water. You can even go a step ahead and apply a leave-in conditioner before a swim for an extra coating of conditioning protection.

Following a swim, rinse your hair with a clean water rinse. If you're chlorined up more than a number of times throughout your vacation, treat yourself to a cleanse and conditioning afterwards if the occasion calls for it.

Don’t Forget Your Night-Time Routine

After the long holiday days filled with exploration and activities, allow your curls adequate time to recover in the course of the night.

Don’t proceed to bed with wet hair. Let it dry naturally before you doze off. Sleeping on a satin or silk bonnet, scarf or pillowcase can reduce rubbing your hair against the pillow that results in frizz and hair breakage.

Don't forget to hydrate your curls frequently, shield them from exposure, cut back excessive heat styling and allow your curls lots of rest between your adventures at the pool or on the beach.

Most significantly, remember that excellent curls do not have to make up each and every element for every hair day.
